waiting stinks

well, we are in birmingham, waiting on gustav to make landfall.
it all seems so surreal.
last night the calls and text messages started coming in.
steve sent one saying his mom's house in jackson was open to any who needed a place to go.
it seems like deja vu all over again.
we are trying to pull ourselves away from the tv and are going to see the new vin diesel movie in a few minutes.
just put the old noggin on hold for a few hours.
thanks to everyone who has left notes here - it means a lot that you are thinking about us and wishing us well.
i don't know what to think and i dare not predict.
i just know i can't keep going through this over and over and over again.
guess we'll just see what happens...

the trip of lifetime - part 1

joseph and i just returned from our 2 week vacation in san francisco and the sonoma, russian river valley, and napa wine country.
it was the trip of a lifetime!!!
we ate and drank our way through this part of california. i got to see the pacific for the first time as well as frida kahlo's work in person for the first time.
here are a few pics from along the way....

definistration building. didn't think i would get to see it, but our cab went right by it on the way in from the airport. this was my first picture of san francisco

china town at night

me at the china town gate.

joseph and the bay bridge

mushroom stand at the ferry building

caviar bar at the ferry building. a complete and utter indulgence on our first day there! it was heaven.

street lights in china town.

i can't even imagine trying to park like that...

russian hill stairs

macondray lane

my only picture of the cable car.

yes, we walked lombard. so touristy, i know. but it had to be done...

joseph outside city lights.

long way down... top of telegraph hill

our first, kinda, almost view of the golden gate bridge from telegraph hill

decending telegraph hill

winding stairs and lanes require street signs, evidently.

beautiful garden on telegraph hill

at the bottom of telegraph hill. yeah, we climed all the way down. that last leg was scarey. whoever built those stairs should be spanked.

the trip of a life time - part two

second half of the trip -- leaving san francisco and going into muir woods and somoma, then into the russian river valley for our " day of pinot"

driving over the golden gate bridge.

blurry redwoods. i was very disappointed in the way these turned out. don't know what happened.

my only non-blurry picture of muir woods. no ansel adams this one!

hiking in muir woods. you probably can't see him, but there is a chipmunk in this picture. little bugger ran right in to my shot!

shug winery in the carneros region. our first stop once we hit sonoma.

beltane ranch where we stayed in sonoma. it's even more beautiful in person!

baked goat's cheese at the fig cafe in glen ellen.

us at benzinger

benzinger - very informative tour. we also got to see some of the first grapes coming in.

winery sign in glen ellen

these vines were over 60 years old. they didn't need to be staked. they looked like little trees.

j vineyards. the best pinot!!

gary farrell. yum!

the best cheese in the world - pleasant ridge reserve - extra aged.

trip of a lifetime - part 3

the second half of the trip....

the russian river valley, napa valley, and then back to san francisco. i got to go the frida kahlo exhibit while there, but i couldn't take any pics.

russian river

pacific coast hike self portrait

that's one big ass gnome!

russian river valley. or should we say TWIN PEAKS?!

the LOCALS tasting room. i forget where

sculture at CLOS PEGAS winery

napa valley

joseph at STAG'S LEAP vineyards. the best wine we had the whole trip, in my opinion. we weren't spitting that out. it took us an hour of walking around the grounds to sober up enough to leave. the CASK 23 cabernet was $175 a bottle and worth every penny. but we still counldn't afford to bring one home. maybe for our anniversary...

building next to the oakville store

frog pond at FROG'S LEAP vineyards.

one ring to bind them all... the guys at FROG'S LEAP have a great sense of humor. this is an arbour for thier kiwi bushes.

chateau montelana - the basis for the book THE JUDGEMENT OF PARIS and the movie BOTTLE SHOCK.
pretty good wine. but we had no more room, so we didn't buy any.

the french laundry in yountville. we couldn't afford to eat there, so we took this picture instead. we ate at bistro jeanty - see pic below...

the tomato soup at bistro jeanty in yountville. yum! it's a puff paistry on top of the soup.

the haight. totally gross. much like bourbon street, only i couldn't walk around with my liquor. we both really regretted going. but it had to be done.

on the return trip to san francisco - me on the ferry over to sausalito. had the best sushi OF MY LIFE at a place called sushi ran. i highly recommend it. they fly their fish in from the tokoyo market daily. it was also THE MOST EXPENSIVE sushi dinner of my life!
